Electrophoretic Deposition

We've crafted a cutting-edge technique that fuses electrophoretic and electrostatic deposition processes to create fabrics that not only repel water but also resist bacteria. This is particularly important for clothing and textiles in medical and healthcare settings, where preventing the spread of disease-causing bacteria through direct contact is critical.

Our innovative work has led to the production of fabrics that are both superhydrophobic (extremely water-repellent) and antibacterial. We've achieved this by applying a layer of zinc oxide (ZnO) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-enhanced silicon dioxide (SiO2) nanoparticles onto fabric surfaces. This coating was meticulously applied using a method that combines the best of both electrophoretic and electrostatic deposition techniques.

The fabrics we've developed feature a dual-layer defense: the outer SiO2 layer wards off the initial contact with bacterial droplets, while the underlying ZnO layer actively eliminates any residual bacteria. As a result, these fabrics significantly cut down the chances of bacterial attachment and survival, effectively reducing the risk of infection.

Our approach stands out because it allows for the precise placement of various nanoparticles onto non-conductive materials such as fabrics and paper, with exact control over the coating's thickness and the nano/microstructures. This precision is not something you’d typically see with conventional fabric coating methods. Plus, by adjusting the electrode size and shape used in the process, we can specify the area and pattern of the functional surfaces, making it a boon for mass production without compromising the fabric’s original feel or function.

The potential applications of this hybrid method are vast, extending to any supplies, like fabrics and filters, that require protection against biological contaminants. This technology paves the way for the development of new, functional commercial products that meet the rising demand for hygienic and protective materials in various industries.
